Norman H. Sillman, A.R.C.A, F.R.B.SBorn in England he immigrated with his family to Pyramid Hill in north Victoria, Australia but moved back to the UK about a decade later due to the severe droughts. He served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War through the North African and Italian campaigns. On his return he sculpted toy soldiers for Britains as well as coins and medals for various countries. He was also Art History lecturer at Nottingham University. He is probably best known for his United Kingdom one pound coins in general circulation, of which he designed the four versions for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He now lives with his wife, Jill, in Suffolk and still sculpts. |
